The Idaho Writers Guild is sponsoring three separate contests for short stories, short screenplays and poetry in conjunction with the Idaho Writers & Readers Rendezvous. You may enter as many contests with as many entries as you wish.

You do NOT need to attend or be registered for the conference to participate in these contests.

All contest submissions must be the unpublished, original
work of the author.

1. SHORT STORY CONTEST

a. Double-spaced
b. 4000-word maximum length

SPECIAL NOTE: Alan Heathcock, author of the best-selling collection of short stories, Volt, will choose the first place winner from the top three short stories received.

2. SHORT SCREENPLAY CONTEST

a. Standard industry format. Click here for a sample, or contact the contest coordinator at contest@idahowritersrendezvous.com if you are unable to access the sample file.
b. 10 page maximum

SPECIAL NOTE: Acclaimed screenwriter, script consultant and instructor, David Trottier, will choose the first place winner from the top three screenplays received.

IN ADDITION: The winning short screenplay will have a Table Reading at one of the Idaho Screenwriter's Association meetings, and Script Doctor Lance Thompson will give a personal script consultation to the winner!

3. POETRY CONTEST

SPECIAL NOTE: Poet Robert Wrigley, author of eight books of poetry and winner of multiple awards, will choose the first place winner from the top three poems received.

FOR THE WINNER

The winner of each contest category will receive:

  • 1st prize: $100.00 Award
  • 2nd prize: $50.00 Award
  • Michaelbrent Collings, screenwriter, will give a consultation to the winner of the screenplay contest

  • Plus, from The Write Brothers:
    • 1st prize for Short Story: Dramatica Pro
      1st prize for the screenplay: Screenwriter 6
      1st prize for the poetry: Outline 4D
      3 copies of Writer's Dreamkit for the 2nd prize winners.
      Plus 6 copies of Word Menu, one for each winner

CONTEST RULES

1. Mail or otherwise deliver three (3) copies of your entry to:

2. Deadline: 5 P.M. Friday, March 30, 2012

3. Complete the Contest Entry Form found here and include it with your manuscript. Your entry packet should contain:

  1. Entry form: One for each entry (this is the only place your name and personal information may appear)
  2. Title page of work: Title and one-paragraph synopsis ONLY (your name CANNOT appear on this page or in the manuscript)
  3. Format: All entries typed in 12 point Courier New or Times New Roman (no other fonts or sizes, please!)
  4. Your manuscript: short story, screenplay or poem
  5. Payment: If you do not pay online (see Contest Entry Form) include a check or money order with your entry(s), made payable to Idaho Writers Guild.
  6. Judge’s notes: If you request judge’s notes, include a stamped self-addressed envelope for them.
  7. Self-addressed, stamped postcard to acknowledge receipt of manuscript, if you do not have email.
Please keep the original of your work as submissions will not be returned.

ENTRY FEES: ($5 discount on fee for first entry for IWG members only)

1. Short Story: $30 ($25 IWG) for first entry, $25 each additional entry

+ $10 if you wish to receive Judges notes (optional)

2. Short Screenplay: $30 ($25 IWG) for first entry, $25 each additional entry

+ $10 if you wish to receive Judges notes (optional)

3. Poetry: $15 ($10 IWG) for first poem, $10 each additional poem

+ $10 Judges Notes (optional)
